DESCRIPTION;ENCODING=QUOTED-PRINTABLE:ABSTRACT: Generational technology leaps in the past 24 months have equipped Research and Education networks with new functionality and flexibility for emerging applications and science. This presentation will provide a review of significant R&E networking demonstrations and the technologies that enabled them. Some E-science and research applications can actually consume 100G bandwidth and test-bed demonstrations of these are discussed. Recent demonstrations of note include long distant 100/40Gbps shown at TERENA 2011 in Prague, emergence of 100G Ethernet applications, long distant telemedicine, Super Computer SC11 demonstration to support Peta-Scale Computing and long Haul 100GE demo network by Internet2. The level of multi-vendor collaboration undertaken to enable these demonstrations is noted.=0AThese breakthroughs have been enabled through development of long distant 40/100G bandwidth technologies and techniques to overcome Optical Network impairments. The presentation will include a technical description of the challenges of achieving ultra high speed long-haul optical transmission.
