The traditional incremental improvement approach may not be adequate to address the massive data movement needs. Terabits networks that leverage the emerging 100GigE technology offer a path forward for addressing the anticipated data movement needs. However, exploiting 100 GigE technologies will be challenging. It will involve developing fundamentally new networks protocols and scaling ones. Radically new approaches such as hybrid traffic engineering schemes that combine packets and circuit switching; new transport protocols that effectively deliver multi-gigabits to science applications; fundamentally new schemes for cross multi-layer protection; robust standards to facilitate multi-layers/ multi-domain and inter-operability of multi-vendor networking; and innovative disk-to-network I/O sub-systems. Meeting these challenges will require effective collaboration between network researchers, R&E networks, and vendors.
